Les Nabis

(movement, 1890’s-present)

Nabis, from the Hebrew word ‘navi’, which means prophet. Group of Post-Impressionist artists in the 1890s. Led by Paul Serusier and Maurice Denis. Other members were Édouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, Aristide Maillol, Félix Vallotton, and Ker Xavier Roussel.

The Nabis: Bonnard, Vuillard and their circle.<br />Inspired by contemporary Symbolist theory and the art of Paul Gauguin, the Nabis set out to revolutionize traditional aesthetics, turning their talents to painting, printmaking, posters, book illustration, textiles, furniture, and theatre design. Their common aim was to make art part of everyday life.
