I don’t have many choices in producing my work, so I take the photograph but the final result is always this [C-print mounted on] Plexiglas and it’s framed. On the one hand, I am happy that I found a solution that works very well for presentation; but on the other hand, I wish I could work with different materials. I’m a bit jealous of painting, where you have surface and the smell of paint.

Carrà experimented with Divisionism, but like Boccioni was dissatisfied with current trends in painting. Together with Boccioni and Russolo he drafted the Manifesto of the Futurist Painters and the Technical Manifesto of Futurist Painting (both 1910), issuing his own manifesto The Painting of Sounds, Noises and Smells in 1913. The painting of sounds, noises and smells calls for:
Reds, rrrrreds, the rrrrrreddest rrrrrrreds that shouuuuuuut. Greens, that can never be greener, greeeeeeeeeeeens that screeeeeeam, yellows, as violent as can be: polenta yellows, saffron yellows, brass yellows.

Carrà theoretical position, grounded in a post-war "return to order," signaled his break with the classicism of de Chirico. After a short-lived phase of Magic Realism, by the mid-twenties, Carrà had evolved his mature style that combined archaizing figures with an atmospheric brushwork, redolent of nineteenth century Impressionist Naturalism.

The Djerassi Collection of work by Swiss Modernist Paul Klee, assembled by Dr. Carl Djerassi and placed in SFMOMA’s care, is seen in full for the first time ever in this exhibition. Artworks in the Collection, most of which are on paper, reveal the spirit of investigation and experimentation Klee brought to his practice as a master of the twentieth-century avant-garde. Spanning the years from 1885 to Klee’s death in 1940, the 140 works on view include watercolors, drawings, etchings, and lithographs…

Klee was born on December 18, 1879, in Münchenbuchsee, near Bern, Switzerland, the second child of Hans Klee, a German music teacher, and a Swiss mother. His training as a painter began in 1898 when he studied drawing and painting in Munich for three years. By 1911, he had returned to that city, where he became involved with the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), founded by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc in 1911. Klee and Kandinsky became lifelong friends, and the support of the older painter provided much-needed encouragement. Until then, Klee had worked in relative isolation, experimenting with various styles and media, such as making caricatures and Symbolist drawings, and later producing small works on paper mainly in black and white. His work was also influenced by the Cubism of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, and the abstract translucent color planes of Robert Delaunay…

Picasso was exceptionally prolific throughout his long lifetime. The total number of artworks he produced has been estimated at 50,000, comprising 1,885 paintings; 1,228 sculptures; 2,880 ceramics, roughly 12,000 drawings, many thousands of prints, and numerous tapestries and rugs. At the time of his death many of his paintings were in his possession, as he had kept off the art market what he didn’t need to sell. In addition, Picasso had a considerable collection of the work of other famous artists, some of his contemporaries, such as Henri Matisse, with whom he had exchanged works.

Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, printmaker, sculptor, ceramist, poet, stage designer and a playwright. He was considered to be one of the 20th century’s most influential and greatest artists. He is also known as thefounder of the Cubist movement and a co-inventor of collage. He also helped in revolutionizing the development of printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and many kinds of art.

Picasso 1

Pablo Picasso started painting early in his life. His mentor was his father who trained him hard and well. Pablo Picasso’s artwork in his earlier years can be found at the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, Spain; the museum provides extensive and comprehensive records of the artist’s humble beginnings. It was in 1894 though, that he became famous and his career as a painter blossomed.

Picasso 2

Pablo Picasso’s artwork went into different phases. Those phases include the Blue Period, which occurred between 1901 and 1904, where his paintings were primarily in shades of blue and blue-green; however, there were some cases where other shades of colors were used. Among the paintings that he painted during the Blue period were more about skinny mothers with children. Pablo Picasso’s artwork also depicted beggars and prostitutes.

Picasso 3

In 1904 to 1906, Pablo Picasso’s artwork was classified  into the Rose Period. It was during this period when his paintings were more cheery. Most of the colors that Pablo Picasso used in his paintings were that of pink and orange hues.  They featured acrobats, harlequins and circus people. This period became very symbolic to Pablo Picasso’s artwork because of the checkered-patterned color of the harlequin’s clothing. Aside from that, Fernande Olivier, Picasso’s mistress, became an inspiration to his painting during this period.

The evolution of Pablo Picasso’s artwork continued on as he embarked into adapting the African influence of art. It was in 1907 to 1909 where he painted images which were inspired from African artifacts.

Picasso 4

Soon after that, the cubism rose to fame. It was Pablo and Georges Braque who developed the said technique using neutral colors and monochrome brownish. Pablo created a lot of paintings with cubism style. Such paintings are the Guitariste, La mandoliniste, Portrait of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, Femme assise dans un fauteuil and many more.

Picasso lived through the World War I and World War II. He was often questioned and his works were also confiscated. Because of the suppression of his artistic prowess in painting by the Nazis, he took up writing as an alternative.

After World War II, Pablo Picasso’s artwork became more complex as he took on different projects such as sculpture. One of his famous works is the Chicago Sculpture, which he donated to the people of Chicago in 1967. The sculpture is 15 feet high and its form is somewhat abstract as no one could actually define what it is.

Throughout his life, Pablo Picasso’s artwork comprised of 1,885 paintings, 2,880 ceramics, 1,228 sculptures and about 12,000 drawings.

Most of his works are now displayed in different museums around the world and have been considered prized possessions in the art world.

Almond is interested in the notions of geographical limits and the means of getting there – in particular, culturally specific points of arrival and departure. Since 1998, Almond has been making a series of landscape photographs known as the Fullmoons. Taken during a full moon with an exposure time of 15 minutes or more, these images of remote geographical locations appear ghostly, bathed in an unexpectedly brilliant light where night seems to have been turned into day…

Darren Almond
Ideas about memory permeate much of Almond’s work. The four-screen video installation shown here, If I Had You 2003, focuses on the personal memories of his widowed grandmother. Almond filmed her as she revisited Blackpool, where she had spent her honeymoon, for the first time since her husband’s death twenty years earlier…

Darren Almond
Summing up the work of British artist Darren Almond is difficult. He is a sculptor and a video artist whose work by all outward appearance, even when grouped by medium, remains incredibly disparate. What distinguishes it as a body of work, however, is his fascination with time…

Darren Almond
As a very young boy, Almond used to escape from the small coalmining village in which he grew up, boarding trains going anywhere and losing himself in the rail network which veins across England. As an adult, he fabricates a sculpture for a train, a ‘Darren James Almond’ nameplate for an Intercity 125 bound from Paddington to Cornwall…

Jean Arp or Hans Arp as some people may call him was a French-German artist who was born on September 16, 1866 and died on June 7, 1966. He was a known sculptor, abstract painter, poet and painter.

Jean Arp

Many people think that Jean Arp’s original name was Hans and he changed it to Jean. But contrary to popular belief, this wasn’t true. Jean Arp simply referred to himself as Hans when he spoke in German and Jean when he spoke in French.

Jean Arp’s mother was French and his father was German, and interestingly he has adopted both cultures and even spoke the two languages. He was born in Strasbourg. He went to different schools to hone his craft not only in poetry but also in sculpture and painting.

Jean Arp started his career as a poet and published his first poetry in 1904 in Paris. He travelled a lot, taking advantage of the opportunity where he can show his works and be known as an artist. In 1905, Jean Arp went to Weimar, Germany and studied in Kunstschule for 2 years.

Jean Arp was a founder-member of the Moderne Bund (Modern Alliance), one of the earliest associations that encouraged reception of modern or contemporary art in Switzerland. The association did well as they have made a mark in the culture and arts of the country.

Jean Arp 1

Since moving to Zurich, Switzerland in 1912, he joined a major art exhibition with renowned painters Robert Delaunay, Henri Matisse and Wasilly Kandinsky. Jean Arp then moved to Berlin, Germany in 1913 to publish some of his works as he was asked by Herwarth Walden, one of the most influential people during the European avant-garde. Jean Arp stayed on for a few years and did many works.

Jean Arp was also a founding member of the Dada movement. Dada was composed of poets and artists who were against violence, especially the World War I. Jean Arp’s group was basically protesting against colonialism and it was their battle-cry to end war and violence. They expressed their sentiments and protests through their artworks and poetry.

Jean Arp’s popularity did not only depend on the fact that he was associated and co-founded different groups and worked with renowned artists. Jean Arp proved his worth as he was able to publish a lot of poems and essays to his account. He continually did this from 1930 until his demise.

Jean Arp Sculpture

Of course, he also had fine sculptures and one of Jean Arp’s most famous works is the Cloud Shepherd which he sculpted in 1953. The sculpture is now displayed in Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas in Venezuela.

With Jean Arp’s proven track record of being a great artist, he was given numerous awards for his exemplary works. Some of the awards include the 1954 Venice Biennale, 1964 Pittsburgh International, Carnegie Prize in 1964, Grand Prix National des Arts in 1963, and University of Hamburg’s Goethe Prize in 1963 and the Order of Merit with a Star of the German Republic.
