![]() SITE Santa Fe's Seventh International Biennial Lucky Number Seven June 22 October 26, 2008 1606 Paseo de Peralta Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501 Curated by Lance Fung As an independent curator, Fung has created important exhibitions in this country and abroad: Crossing Parallels, at the SSamzie Space in Seoul, Korea; Going Home, at the Edward Hopper Historical Museum, Nyack, New York; Revisiting Gordon Matta-Clark, at the Venice Architectural Biennale in 2002; and The Snow Show Preview at UNESCO’s Palazzo Zorzi for the 2003 Venice Biennale. One of his most exciting projects was The Snow Show exhibition, realised in 2004 in Lapland and in 2006 in Torino, Italy for The Cultural Olympiad of the XX Olympic Winter Games. The Snow Show presented the collaborative works of over 30 internationally recognized artists and architects, including Tadao Ando, Daniel Buren, Norman Foster, Morphosis, Yoko Ono, and Kiki Smith. Each SITE Santa Fe biennial has been a unique expression of the curator’s vision. Over the years, many different themes have been explored, and the exhibitions that have resulted have varied accordingly. However, an important aspect of my proposal was the recognition of the proliferation of so many biennials around the world. The biennial as an alternative format for presenting new art has often become little more than an empty exercise. Throughout art history, innovation has always occurred as the result of an artist or movement reacting against the status quo, and I feel that this Biennial should be a reaction to what is happening in this exhibition arena. Innovation does not happen in a vacuum. To generate the spark of inspiration, creativity requires challenges. My curatorial objectives include three main elements that I attempt to include in each of my exhibitions and curatorial projects: first, a strong emphasis on the collaborative nature of the creative process; second, an attention to the unique environment of the exhibition and the challenges that it might pose for the artists; and third, a high degree of accessibility for viewers, coupled with intellectual rigor and a strong commitment to arts education. At the core of my proposal is the belief that the curatorial process for the SITE Santa Fe Biennial should be open, collaborative, and community oriented. Therefore, the participants in Lucky Number Seven will include, in addition to SITE Santa Fe itself, 19 other public institutions. These other institutions have been invited to participate in the Biennial and to collaborate with SITE Santa Fe. Each institution has suggested three artists for me to review, and in my capacity as the chief curator, I have selected one artist to represent each organization. The artist who is chosen to participate reflects the specific direction and ideology embraced by the participating institution...> > |
