Øivind Bergerud was born in Askim, Norway, in 1942. Between 1959 and 1962 he attended the National College of Art and Craft, Oslo.
For twenty five years he worked as a fasion designer in Paris. In 1987, he returned to the National College of Art and Craft in Oslo, where he taught for twelve years.
Retiring in 1999, he travelled and painted in France, Spain and Portugal. Since 2000, he has been a resident in the Tavira area. The landscape of the Ria Formosa has inspired much of his recent work.
