Open Call for Picturing the World Family

Click to Enlarge! Picturing the World Family is a call to action from photographers (professional, non-professional & students) to submit a portfolio (a photo-essay of 5 images) that showcases the landscape of contemporary family lives and relationships as they exist across the World today. 

Picturing the World Family is a 21st Century response to Edward Steichen's Family of Man exhibition. Where Picturing the World Family differs from Steichen's Family of Man exhibition, is that it uses the power of the photo-essay (portfolio) to tell a story, rather than using single images and themes (related to personal life experiences), from which to tell a story.

It is an opportunity for each awardee and selected photographers to receive recognition and exposure through being published in an international online gallery, and in the Picturing the World Family Portfolio Book Series.

Submission Fee:
$50 per portfolio (photo-essay of 5 images), $30 each additional portfolio (photo-essay of 5 images)

Three photographers will be awarded first ($1000), second ($500) and third ($250) prize. Their selected photo-essay's, and a further 22 selected photographers photo-essay's, will have their work published in an International Online Exhibition, and in the Picturing the World Family Book Series.

Reid Callanan is founder and director of the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, currently in its twenty-third year offering workshops to the international imaging community.  In addition to educational programs in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Havana, Cuba, the Workshops partners with National Geographic Expeditions to offer photography workshops around the world.

In 1994 Reid founded the non-profit Santa Fe Center for Photography, now known as Center, and is currently an officer on its Board of Directors.

Reid started photographing in 1974 and has been working since then on a personal diary of images called HOMESCAPES.  He has used a variety of photographic processes to make these prints including b/w silver halide paper, Polaroid Time-Zero film, and ink-jet digital prints. 

Larry Padgett is an advocate for the art of photography. More specifically, he has a passion for helping artists succeed in their efforts to be successful in the pursuit of exhibiting, publishing and selling their work. He believes photographers represent the truest entrepreneurial spirit – creating art from intangible concepts that express the soul of their creator.

In 2003 he founded The Center for Fine Art Photography and was its executive director until 2009. An international nonprofit organization, the Center promotes the art of photography and provides educational programs that foster the growth of creative artists. During his tenure he provided venues and a voice for artists from more than 25 countries, hosting more than 60 international exhibitions, directing three traveling shows, while publishing three collections.

Prior to founding the Center he taught college-level photography classes and workshops, and was a successful commercial photographer for ten years.

Today, Padgett provides consulting services tailored to an individual photographer’s growth plans. He integrates the business of photography with marketing and sales opportunities as they apply to each person’s capabilities and resources. He guides artists through the maze of business challenges; showing them how to make information-based decisions that will lead to their initial success, or grow them to their next level. In the process, artists become empowered to apply what they learn to their new and expanding opportunities.

Larry lectures and provides workshops on Internet marketing, conducts portfolio reviews, juries and curates exhibitions and consults with directors of arts organizations. He has reviewed for Critical Mass and Photolucida.

Dawne Fahey is the founding Director of FIER Institute, a not for profit organisation, which has been established to advance the role of photography. She combines her passion for fine art and documentary photography, with her photographic practice that includes alternate photographic process and hand made prints. In her personal work Dawne seeks to find emotional depth in ordinary events and everyday objects, and the extraordinary in the landscape that surrounds her. In doing so, she seeks to make sense of the world around her. Her work has been shown nationally across Australia, London and New York.
