Through the manipulation of common items such as rubber bands, rice and needles, Tsuji transforms simple forms into complex organic structures, giving them a life of their own. The fake nails arranged in a worm-like form on the floor in Guest (2009), transform the prosthetics of beauty into an abhorrent and parasitic creature that slowly eats away at our sensibilities, as does vanity. Mutation (2010), created by meticulously gluing together individual grains of rice in the corner of the room, proliferates like a bulbous, genetic mutation that cannot be arrested…
