Geboren als Roswita Tölle, absolvierte die Photographin Tata Ronkholz zunächst ein Praktikum als Schreinerin und studierte anschließend von 1961-65 Architektur und Innenarchitektur an der Werkschule in Krefeld. Ab 1967 war sie als selbstständige Produktdesignerin tätig. 1977 schrieb sie sich als Schülerin bei Professor Bernd Becher in der Klasse für Photographie in Düsseldorf ein.

Tata Ronkholz was a documentarian and collector like Atget, and followed the Becher idea of the neutral, comparative photograph. However she was not interested in recording large industrial monuments, Ronkholz preferred to look for motifs on the borders of the world of work – with the “industrial gates” she concentrated on the transition from the spheres of work and recreation. The apparently offbeat, accidental combination of newspaper headlines and advertising hoardings at the places where workers met after work presented a more interesting aspect than the documentation of entire building sites.
