Ghani has a BA in Comparative Literature from NYU (2000) and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York (2002). She teaches at Cooper Union and in the Art and Public Policy programme at NYU. She has been awarded the NYFA and Soros New Americans Fellowships as well as numerous grants and residencies in the US and Europe, most recently the LMCC Swing Space Residency, Governors Island, (2010).

Mariam Ghani
My work explores how histories, places, identities and communities are constructed and reconstructed, and the shifting private and public narratives that comprise and contest those constructions. I am particularly fascinated by border zones, nomanslands, translations, transitions, and the slippages where cultures intersect; security cultures, archives, architectures of democracy, and national imaginaries; places where nature and artifice imitate and influence each other; and cities in conflict and post-conflict conditions…

Kabul:Reconstructions was created by artist Mariam Ghani with the collaboration of programmer Ed Potter and the support of Exit Art, Eyebeam Atelier, Akademie Schloss Solitude and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This website was originally launched in 2003 and re-launched in 2008. Some content is still being added to the third and fourth sections.
