A Kassen: the name itself suggests a humorous, playful approach to art. An A-kasse, (a union-affiliated unemployment insurance scheme that pays out benefit to unemployed members) is hardly the first thing one would associate with rampant creativity. But in recent years, the four relatively young artists involved have seen it evolve into a collaborative playground for projects that seek, not least, to reconfigure the encounter between artwork and public.

A Kassen work with performativ installation and sculpture. Actions, discretely part of the exhibition space, are characteristc of A Kassen’s works. The actions may even be so discrete, they don’t get noticed. But if they do get noticed, they contain strong elements of humor and surprise. Once in a while, A Kassen perform the actions themselves, but mostly they are performed by extras or even by monstrous machines, constructed by A Kassen...

A Kassen’s performative installation practice involves interventions within the traditional gallery space. Often so subtle that they could go unnoticed, the works are a complex critique of the institution and how we navigate and interact within the gallery context. The new work demonstrates this in a seemingly simple yet absurdly grand gesture. A Kassen’s video work Minus Roof, produced using footage shot both from the aircraft and within the gallery, will be presented in the restored gallery space...
