Jacques Lipchitz was one of the first artists to apply the principles of Cubism to sculpture. Born Chaim Jacob Lipchitz, he arrived in Paris from Lithuania in 1909, with little artistic background. As a young sculptor in Paris, Lipchitz’s introduction to the Cubism of Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris was crucial to the development of his early work.

Birth of the Muses.

Working in Paris around the middle of the 1920s, the Lithuanian-born sculptor Jacques Lipchitz explored the relationship between space and matter and produced a series of sculptures collectively called ‘transparents’.
