"Le Voleur d’Ombres" – the shadow thief – is the title of the last photo book by Saïdou Dicko. The process of photographing has often been described as the capture of fugitive shadows. In Saïdou Dicko’s pictures this metaphor becomes the real picture content. Most of the ephemeral images he catches are those of people, thus his photos remain objective and definable. They almost work like a shadow play wanting to tell a fictitious story, but for the fact that they took place so evidently in the real life...

L'artiste évoque le contraste entre le milieu urbain et rural. Dans le premier cas, il suffit d’un geste pour que l’eau se mette à couler, dans le second les populations s’acharnent chaque jour dans la quête et la préservation de cette ressource devenue marchandise...

Saidou Dicko est un artiste-peintre burkinabè qui vit à Dakar. Sa rencontre avec la photo est récente, elle ne date que de trois ans. Pourtant, elle fut heureuse à juger du succès rencontré par ses photos à la Biennale de Dakar où elles ont été primées en 2006 et 2008, un peu partout en Europe et aux USA lors de leur exposition au siège de la Banque mondiale ! Avec un appareil photo, Saïdou Dicko retrouve ses anciens plaisirs de petit berger qui traçait avec le doigt les contours des ombres projetées par ses moutons sur le sol...

During his teenage years, he did all kinds of mundane jobs to earn money and buy drawing and painting material. In 1997, he learnt to cook with Philippine missionaries. Two years later, he started working in a hotel in Ouagadougou, first as a dishwasher and then as a cook. Concurrently he created and ran his own youth association with the aim of maintaining a clean infrastructure of the district. In 2003, he became head waiter. During this time, he continued painting with unusual pigments and sold his works to the hotel clients. He also opened an exhibition space much like a traditional Peulh hut in his home...
