Since the mid-1990s, the New York–based artist Alex Bag has created a wide array of acerbic video art––by turns hilarious and horrific––that frequently features Bag herself. Her latest commission opens on January 9 at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Coinciding with the exhibition, Electronic Arts Intermix is expanding its catalogue to include all of Bag’s videos for distribution.

"Ms. Bag, a combination performance artist, stand-up comedian and character actor, is usually the star and sole on-camera participant in her videos, and she has more than enough charisma to carry a show. Her target is media culture, and very often art world culture, which she skewers with mordant brilliance."

In Alex Bag's ironic performance videos, the artist adopts a series of personae to create droll conceptual parodies. With her signature deadpan delivery and deliberately low-tech style, Bag mixes the vernacular of pop culture with irreverently humorous monologues. Performing in multiple guises amidst fragments of pop detritus, Bag skewers the tropes of consumer and media culture. Questioning how we define ourselves in relation to television, fashion, advertising and the artworld, she creates mediated parodies that teeter between celebration and critique...

Alex Bag's turf in the New York art world is comparable to Ann Magnuson's in the '80s and William Wegman's in the '70s: She is the artist who makes artists laugh, clueing in to their culture while sending it up, in Bag's case quite ruthlessly. Wegman's much loved videos starring his weimaraner Man Ray fed off the studio chat of the day; to pose the dog on a box was to poke fond fun at uncountable discussions of the role of the pedestal in sculpture...
