Biography and images
Sophie von Hellerman is a young German artist working in London.  The title of the painting Christo Paffgen is the real name of Warhol protégé, Velvet Underground vocalist, and unrepentant lifelong heroin addict Nico. The 1960s icon was infamous for her sexual endeavours and drug abuse. Rather than capture Nico in all her excess von Hellermann chooses to depict her before she lost her beauty, interest in life, and eventually her death in relative obscurity, and mystery, in Ibiza in 1988.
“I did several paintings where I just replaced time with space,” says Sophie von Hellermann. The daughter of a nuclear physicist, the German-born painter emerged at light speed from the Royal College of Art in 2001, picking up patrons like Charles Saatchi and showing at the Centre Pompidou…

Her work looks soft and sloppy, but don’t be deceived. It’s strategic and suggestive. She is often described as dreamy or Romantic, and it’s easy to agree. Her imagery is magical and her method is to work around the concrete facts. Instead of drawing the meat of a subject, she’ll dash a minimal outline or wash a color field that’s very non-specific. She applies pigment directly to unprimed canvas—like Morris Louis—so the colors have a subtle glow…
