Work in the MUMOK Collection
Richard Gerstl is one of the most important, and also most enigmatic, artists of turn-of-the-century Vienna. Fewer than 100 canvases and drawings survived his suicide in 1908, at the age of twenty-five. Yet these works were decades ahead of their time. Painted with a vibrant, expressive impasto that in many respects anticipates the work of the American Abstract Expressionists, Gerstl’s paintings contrast sharply with the more decorative work of Gustav Klimt, then at the peak of his career…
When one talks of the triumvirate of Austrian Expressionism, after Schiele and Kokoschka, it’s a pity that Gerstl doesn’t replace the name Klimt. Despite the obvious linkage, Klimt was of another generation, even if some of his works were the very archetypes of Expressionism. Unfortunately, Gerstl killed himself at 25 and left behind barely 70 pieces of work…
Gruppenbildnis mit Schonberg’
Richard Gerstl anihilated all of his personal notices, so it is nearly impossible to draw an accurate picture of the artist. All that we know today is what friends and relatives told about him…
