A rare exhibition of famed photographers Pierre et Gilles opened in Berlin last month, comprising a total of 80 unique large-format works spanning over 30 years of collaboration and featuring images never before shown in public. In one word, fantastic!
An enduring couple make glittery photographs filled with myth, camp and homoeroticism.
Subject matter embraces a wide range of themes from homoeroticism and the male nude to glamour and fame, religion and myth. Greek gods, film and pop music stars, French sailors, muscle men, Indian film stars and Roman Catholic saints comprise the image vocabulary of Pierre and Gilles.
In shameless celebration of pop culture, these painted photographs embrace a contemporary fashion aesthetic based on exaggeration, seduction, and stylisation. Chic and daring, this look suggests the hip theatricality and punk chic of Gaultier and the sexiness of those wicked, black-winged suits by Thierry Mugler, as well as the camp, gay sensibility, which Susan Sontag has defined as ‘Being-as-Playing-a-Role… the farthest extension, in sensibility, of the “metaphor of life as theater”’…
