German expressionist painter associated with Die Brucke group. Inspired by Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Edvard Munch. In Berlin he and other rejects of the secession of the New Secession, tried to build together with Kirchner in 1911 the MUIM Institute (Modern lessons in painting) and was successful in both the sale of pictures as well as a designer of interiors for stately homes.
