Maria Buchner was born in Germany and studied sculpture
and painting in Vancouver, Munich, Hamburg and Sydney.
She was a 2001/02 season recipient of a berth in the then titled
Antarctic Humanities Program.
Buchnerís poetic work engages a wide range of media and depicts themes
of nature, wilderness and civilization. Major projects have included
gilding a desert creek bed, building a house from bones and a boat from
feathers.

Saatchi Gallery. Maria Buchner has won numerous art prizes and awards,
and exhibited in over 50 shows and screenings across five continents.

In 1995 Maria spent six months gilding a dry creek bed
near Tibooburra with 24 carat gold leaf. This land art project was
called The Stream of Gold and was spotted shimmering in the desert sun
by pilots flying at altitude.
The project was intended to reinvest the landscape with precious metal
through the natural weathering process of rainfall and flooding.
