Helen Frankenthaler was not heavily influenced by any one culture or heritage, despite her strong family background in Germanic and Jewish culture. Her paintings are individual in style and meaning, and she developed an unconscious attitude that culture was not foreign or exotic, but just one part of who she was.
Biography and works
Frankenthaler is best known for changing the direction of Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s when she began pouring cans of paint directly onto unsized, unstretched canvas…
Critics expound on Frankenthaler’s attention to color in her paintings, while she insists that her main focus is the drawing. Many credit her with expanding the boundaries of cubism; she refers to herself as a Cubist painter. The paradoxes of her life as a painter continued as she gained notoriety internationally.
