Gillian Ayres studied at Camberwell School of Art, London from 1946 to 1950. She worked part time at the AIA Gallery from 1951 to 1959, and went on to teach at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, until 1965. She then taught at St Martinís School of Art, London from 1965 to 1978 and in 1978 became Head of Painting at Winchester School of Art where she remained until 1981…

Gillian Ayres was born in Barnes, London in 1930. From 1946 to 1950 she studied at Camberwell School of Art and in 1989 she was one of the artists commended for the Turner Prize. Ayres was selected because of the mature quality of her painting, as established by the works shown at the Arnolfini Gallery.
Ayres’s work has been exhibited in many group exhibitions in countries throughout the world since 1957, including France, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, USA and Japan. She continues to exhibit regularly at Gimpel Fils, London and at the Alan Cristea Gallery, London. Gillian Ayres lives and works in Cornwall and London.
