Donald Baechler was born in Hartford, Connecticut and educated at the Maryland Institute College of Art and Cooper Union. He has shown his work throughout the world, and is included in major museum collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitneyt Musuem of American Art, the Stedelijk Musuem, the Centre George Pompidou, and many others. He is represented by the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York, where he lives and works.

Donald Baechler: I think a good artist in general is someone who doubts what he’s doing and looks for ways of doing it better and looks for ways of making it more interesting. For me, if I know what the painting’s going to look like, there’s not really any reason to paint it. If I’m not learning something there’s no reason to do it. Or discovering something. And, looking back, often paintings that seem to me radically different start looking very similar…
