Le sculpteur français César Baldaccini, dit César, naît le 1er janvier 1921 à Marseille, dans le quartier de la Belle-de-Mai. Il est le fils d’Omer et Leila Baldaccini, Italiens d’origine toscane, propriétaires d’un modeste commerce de vins. César décède le 6 décembre 1998 à Paris…

French sculptor, born in Marseilles of Italian parents. Full name C-23sar Baldaccini, but is usually known as C-23sar. Studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Marseilles, 1935-9 and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris 1943-8. Started to make sculptures by welding together pieces of scrap metal in 1952 and first made his reputation with solid welded sculptures of insects, various kinds of animals, nudes, etc…

In César’s sculptures the context of Nouveau Réalisme emerges from industrial materials. Through the process of compression, wrecked cars, for example, become sculptures…

Cesar’s own history is closely linked to that of the Fondation Cartier. In the early 1980s, he played an integral role in the creation of the Fondation by urging Alain Dominique Perrin, President of Cartier International at the time, to create an alternative exhibition space that would allow artists to develop their projects freely…
