Works and biography

With his quiet yet striking interventions, Andreas Karl Schulze succeeds in placing spaces and viewers in a type of state of uncertainty between enchantment and disenchantment — in which the means of enchantment are always openly present. And disenchantment, in the sense of disillusionment, means that there is actually not much more there than a few simple, basic elements. These light states of uncertainty thus also have a profoundly existential component and are conscious of their fleetingness. Most of the artist’s works are artworks for a time, only still palpable on the basis of photographic documents…

Andreas Karl Schulze has been exhibiting widely since finishing his studies at the Art Academy in Münster, Germany. He has produced solo exhibitions and installations in Germany at Gallery Horst Schuler in Düsseldorf, the Kunsthistorisches Institute in Bonn, the Kunstverein Heilbronn, the Japanese Culture Institute, the Neues Kunstforum in Cologne and the Field Institute at Museumsinsel Hombroich. He has also shown at Concept Space and the Goethe Institute in Japan; Gallery Katharina Krohn in Basel; Sleeper in Edinburgh; CCNOA in Brussels; and Cairn Gallery, Pittenweem in the UK. He has also participated in group exhibitons in Berlin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Reykjavik, Oslo and many more. In 1993, Shulze was invited by Donald Judd to work in residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX. The resulting installation remained there for two years.
