Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco

Fine Art Museum San Francisco The FAMSF or the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is one of the best places one needs to visit. It is considered to be the biggest museum in the California. FAMSF is composed of two separate museums, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park and the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in Golden Gate Park.

FAMSF’s M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in Golden Gate Park opened its doors to the public in 1895. It exhibits a collection of American art dated from 17th to the 21st centuries, textiles, international modern and contemporary art, costumes, and artworks from different continents such as the Americas, Africa and the Pacific.

Among the famous works displayed in FAMSF’s M. H. de Young Memorial Museum are the 20th-century couture made by famous fashion designers such as Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent, Dior, Chanel, Ralph Rucci, Madame Gres and many more. Of course, there are also baskets, ceramics, tapa and sculptures from different areas in the Pacific, Asia and Africa.

On the other hand, FAMSF’s Legion of Honor museum opened its doors to the public later than the former. The building is like that of the French Pavilion wherein it exudes the European feel. FAMSF’s Legion of Honor houses different ancient and European art that are approximately more than 6,000 years old. Aside from that, FAMSF’s Legion of Honor also has the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts. It is a neoclassical building that is overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and the Lincoln Park.

One of the most celebrated collections in FAMSF’s Legion of Honor is The Thinker. There are also works of art from world-renowned artists such as Rembrandt, Francois Boucher, Monet, Renoir and many more.
The FAMSF’s Legion of Honor museum has also been shown in different films and TV series such as Vertigo and Tale of the City.
The FAMSF is divided into six different areas. These areas have more than 150,000 different artworks and collection and is said to have a total value of $1 billion. Although there is a vast collection, 90% of the total collections are catalogued and photographed. This means that visitors can only look at the collection of FAMSF through these photographs. This is to ensure that the items are preserved well. However, there are about 3,000 items that are displayed and can be viewed anytime so there is indeed so much to be seen in the FAMSF museum.
FAMSF is unlike other big and famous museums where they have huge endowment. This means that they only have to work on what they only have. FAMSF basically rely on their membership fees, donations, ticket sales and items sold in their in-house stores.
The FAMSF or the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and The Louvre have signed a five-year agreement that enables the two parties to share their art works through collaborative exhibitions. The artwork can be seen in two cities and the proceeds of whatever will be earned will be used for research and preservation of the items.
