Art Institute of Chicago

Among the most visited museums in the United States is the Art Institute of Chicago. It is located in
Michigan Boulevard District and has been founded in 1866. There were 35 artists who founded the
school, Chicago Academy of Design, with its goal of providing free education and will run its own gallery to showcase the talents of its students.

Although the school gained success in doing what they
intended, a fire caused its downfall as it burnt all its assets and put the school in debt. This led the
Chicago Academy of Fine Arts bought its assets. Years after its acquisition, the Chicago Academy of Fine
Arts changed its name to the Art Institute of Chicago.

Aside from being one of the most visited museums that ranked 5th in the United States and 21st in the world, the Art Institute of Chicago is also second biggest museum in the United States with an area of 1,000,000 square feet.

The Art Institute of Chicago exhibits a vast collection of artworks of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist eras. Among the Art Institute of Chicago’s collection include European, Old Masters, American, Asian, contemporary and modern art, as well as graphic and industrial designs. Apart from artworks, the Art Institute of Chicago also houses the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries, which holds the art and architecture research collection.

There are more than 260,000 pieces of art in the Art Institute of Chicago. These works of art are said to cover more than 5,000 years of human cultures and expressions from around the world. Considering its vastness, the Art Institute of Chicago’s collections basically transcends from one culture to the other and is exceptionally world-class. Some of the works include Japanese prints, Asian artifacts and American art. It has also been said that the Art Institute of Chicago has the most extensive collection of paintings in Western culture in the United States.

Years have passed and buildings after buildings have been added to accommodate the growing number of the Art Institute of Chicago’s art collection. In fact, in 2006, a new “Modern Wing” has been built to house the world-known collections of the 20th and 21st-century art. The new building has been opened to the public in 2009. The Art Institute of Chicago’s new wing displays modern European sculpture and paintings, architecture and design, contemporary art and also photography.
The collection of fine paintings in the Art Institute of Chicago includes the 30 paintings of Claude Monet such as the Haystacks and the Water Lilies collection. Apart from that, the Art Institute of Chicago also displays the work of Post-Impressionist Paul Cezzane’s The Basket of Apples.

The highlights of the Art Institute of Chicago also include the works of
Henri Matisse, Bathers by a River and Vincent van Gogh’s Self-portrait and Bedroom in Arles.
There is indeed much to see in the Art Institute of Chicago. In fact, a day or two will never be enough to
